A Home of Peace, Practice, and Community

Our Story & History

Founded in 2007, the Buddhist Community Centre UK (BCCUK) was established to serve the spiritual and cultural needs of the growing Buddhist community in the UK, particularly those of Nepalese heritage. What began as a humble effort by a group of dedicated individuals has grown into a vibrant spiritual hub in Aldershot, Hampshire — welcoming people of all backgrounds who seek peace, mindfulness, and connection through the teachings of the Buddha.

In 2014, the monastery was consecrated as Tashi Dongak Choeling by His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche, marking a significant spiritual milestone for the community. One year later, in June 2015, the Centre was officially inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, further establishing BCCUK as a respected centre for Buddhist practice and learning in the UK.

Mission & Vision

Our mission at BCCUK is to preserve and promote the timeless teachings of the Buddha and to foster a peaceful, compassionate, and inclusive community. Through regular practice, cultural celebration, and social service, we aim to inspire inner transformation and communal harmony.

We envision a world where mindfulness, compassion, and wisdom guide human interaction — where the teachings of the Buddha are accessible to all, regardless of background or belief. BCCUK seeks to be a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern life, offering space for growth, healing, and shared humanity.

Leadership & Volunteers

BCCUK is led by a dedicated team of spiritual advisors, trustees, and community volunteers who uphold the values of service, humility, and generosity. Our leadership works closely with the community to ensure that all programs and events reflect the centre’s spiritual purpose and cultural integrity.

The monastery is largely sustained through the selfless contributions of volunteers — from organising pujas and festivals to guiding visitors and maintaining the temple grounds. Their continued support makes our work possible and deeply meaningful.

The Dalai Lama’s Visit

A highlight in our history came on 29 June 2015, when His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama officially inaugurated BCCUK. His visit was a moment of immense spiritual significance and blessing, not just for our centre, but for the wider community. His Holiness shared words of wisdom, compassion, and unity — affirming the importance of BCCUK as a centre for ethical living and inner development.

This historic event continues to inspire our work and strengthen our commitment to the path of peace and service.

Our Lineage

BCCUK follows the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism, with strong connections to Tibetan and Himalayan Vajrayāna practices. Our spiritual foundation is rooted in the teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni, and we are deeply honoured to receive blessings and guidance from revered masters such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche, and other highly respected lineage holders.

This lineage upholds the principles of loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, and the Bodhisattva path — inspiring practitioners to live with awareness and serve all sentient beings.

“May all beings be free from suffering and live in peace.”
